Why style and not fashion? Well, because fashion is more streamline. It's what you see on the runway and at the mall. The fashion industry is constantly moving; always ready to set the next trend. Some fashion is timeless, but some is simply "trendy". The keyword in trend is END. It doesn't last. Style is so much more than fashion and trends because you get to choose it. It's a reflection of you rather than the current statuesque.
Everyone has a personal style. It can be influenced by fashion and trends, but while still staying true to its owner. In the world of fashion, everything always comes back. So really, nothing ever goes out of style (except cruel fashion). One just simply needs to know how to style themselves once they know what they like. This doesn't happen over night and may take time to figure out.
We don't always know what are personal style is especially as we mature. From teen to 20, from 20 to 30, and so on. As we mature, our personal style shifts but some preferences never change. For example, I have loved graphic t-shirts all my life regardless of my age. In contrast, I've never liked anything from the 70's/80's and I likely never will.
Some things that have changed with age are my preferences to length and fit. I prefer longer and looser clothes rather than tight and short. My nails are now styled short and neutral instead of long and colorful. So you see, some preferences change and some don't. The key to figuring out your style is knowing what you like, knowing what looks good on you, and making it you.
Here is some advice:
If you know it doesn't flatter you, but you like it... don't do it.
I love mustard yellow, but it looks awful on me.
If you don't like it, but it looks good on you... don't do it.
Lots' of things can look good on you, but that doesn't mean you have to like it.
If you like it, it looks good on you, but it's not the latest fashion trend... do it.
While some are buying the latest Dior satchel bag, I'm buying an old vintage clutch.
If you're not sure of something, try it and decide for yourself.
Don't let other people decide what your personal style is; who you are.
Allow yourself to be influenced, but do not become someone you are not.
